In 1945, the Greenwood County Community Chest was established and raised a total of $52,500 to fund five agencies. Those agencies included Salvation Army, Tuberculosis Association, Juvenile Council, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. To date, 25 agencies are serving the community with a total of 32 programs.
Major textile industries and other businesses grew and prospered over the years and began to fund the health and human services organizations. The Community Chest officially became United Way of Greenwood in 1970 and the partnership with Abbeville County began in 1992.
In 2008, 1.5 million dollars was raised to impact our communities and help improve people’s lives. The United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville Counties total revenue is generated through employee campaign, private donations and grant funding.
